Great choice of venue and what an impressive guest list for the Diesel Black Gold Spring/Summer 2012 Fashion Show held at Pier 94 on Day 6 of New York Fashion Week. VIPs eager to catch the full DBG SS12 show included Ambra Medda, Damien Kulash, Gerard Butler, Petra Nemcova, Alexandra Richards, Rianne ten Haken, Linda Vojtova, Common, Olivier Zahm, Anna Dello Russo, and the Roitfeld girls (photos here).
The theme for SS12 is reflection – literally and figuratively. Fresh fashion forward utilitarian looks using ample silhouettes play on industrial elements reflecting light in way that captivates the observer. Silver and iridescent metallics appear aquatic imitating marine life yet assertive, even protective. The glistening, gleaming, glitter has been major trend during New York Fashion week as has this resurgence of utilitarian chic. The brand succeeds in taking us on style ride while keeping the denim heritage intact.
For the Diesel Black Gold SS12 Collection, designer Sophia Kokosalaki has succeeded in getting to the core of the brand’s identity and has dared to push forward. For the women, hard rock and industrial disco combines with feminine tailored pieces – a feast for the eyes. A key trend for the ladies that I’m personally loving are the trousers that flare out front-to-back. They flare forward onto the instep of the foot in the front, but come short at the heel (also seen at the Dean Quinn SS12). The men’s pieces are scaled back, edgy but not overboard. Highlights include the metallic trousers, DBG interpretation of the trench coat, and the black leather biker jackets. Kokosalaki took a gamble, but it’s one that will pay dividends come next spring/summer.
