Finnish design house Marimekko participated in Copenhagen Fashion Week with a digital presentation today on Thursday February 3rd 2022. In addition, the brand opened a joint exhibition with Danish photo-based artist Trine Søndergaard, whose work has inspired Marimekko’s overarching theme for the year 2022: New Folk. The public exhibition is open until Saturday February 5th and delves into the mutual artistic inspiration between Søndergaard and Marimekko’s Creative Director Rebekka Bay.
New Folk – New Traditions: fresh perspectives to tailoring
Throughout 2022, each Marimekko collection has, in its own way, explored the similarities between folk wear around the globe. The final collection of the year called New Folk – New Traditions proposes a fresh take on tailoring: classic tailoring traditions, cuts and techniques are translated into softer, more comfortable pieces perfect for everyday wear. The season’s captivating play of prints, silhouettes, proportions, layers, and jewelry-like details offer an intriguing dialogue between old and new ways of dressing.
”This season, we investigated the arts of tailoring and layering, which are common features found in folk wear all around the world. Layering different pieces with different functions allows the wearer to style the same piece up or down for a myriad of occasions and weathers. In our Fall/Winter 2022 collection, each piece can be worn on its own or layered with existing pieces of your wardrobe. Combinability and modularity continue to be at the center of Marimekko’s updated design ethos”, says Rebekka Bay, Creative Director at Marimekko.
The Fall/Winter 2022 print selection is exclusively composed Marimekko’s archive prints from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Canvas whites and soft grey beiges are complimented with a rich mix of butternut, chanterelle, amber and chestnut blossoming on the bold prints the design house has become famous for.
